The counties of Gömör (Slovak: Gemer, German: Gemer) and Nógrád (Slovak: Novohrad, German: Neuburg) were established by King St. István of Kingdom of Hungary at the time of the founding of the state and the organization of the royal county system. The counties lasted for almost a thousand years, between 1000 and 1918. Since 1918, the territory of the counties of Gömör and Nógrád in the Kingdom of Hungary has been divided by Hungary and Slovakia, after the former Czechoslovakia. In addition to the more than a thousand-year-old Hungarian culture, the region also includes Slovak, German and Roma culture.
